Walton £6m road revamp to get under way

A stretch of the A59 is to undergo a £6m improvement scheme, covering between Great Mersey Street and Queens Drive in Walton.

Contractors King Construction will begin the 12-month package of works, which includes three upgraded crossings, a toucan crossing, two further pedestrian crossings, bus priority at two major junctions, and 1.2 miles of road resurfacing.

Works will begin near Scotland Road closest to the city centre and the scheme will work northwards before finishing at Queens Drive. Overnight road closures are expected at some times throughout the works.

Liverpool City Council warned “delays will be likely” for those travelling to and from Walton, Kirkdale, and Anfield during the works.

The project is part of the council’s wider £500m Better Roads programme, which has received £3.5m of Local Growth Fund money, via the National Productivity Investment Fund.

Andy Barr, Liverpool City Council’s head of highways, said: “This revamp of the A59 in Walton is a significant and much needed investment and a good example of how the Better Roads programme is improving Liverpool’s highways infrastructure.

“Naturally, for a major arterial road connecting Liverpool city centre to our motorways and passing major venues as as Goodison Park and Aintree Racecourse, works of this scale will cause disruption but the programme has been designed to minimise impact and which is why the programme will begin after the Grand National.

“Once complete this stretch of the A59 will be a much more pleasurable experience for all road users and pedestrians.”
