United Utilities to invest £900m+ in improving North West waterways

The Warrington-based water service provider announced the financial commitment at the same time as unveiling its new chief executive: Louise Beardmore.

Beardmore, a native Liverpudlian, had been United Utilities’ chief executive designate since April last year. Before that, she was the water company’s customer service and people director. She began her new role as chief executive in March.

Beardmore voiced her enthusiasm for her position, saying: “We have a dedicated workforce, proud to be serving the people of this region and I’m excited to get started in my new role because there’s a lot to do.”

It was Beardmore who announced a £914m investment programme for the North West.

Subject to stakeholder consultation, £719m of the funds will go towards reducing storm overflow spills and protecting water quality at inland waterways. United Utilities named Windermere in the Lake District specifically as one of the areas that would benefit from this investment.

Another £117m is set aside for habitat improvements around the River Eden in Cumbria.

The remaining £78m will be used to reduce the frequency of storm overflow spills into bathing waters.

“We have an ambitious plan, including the largest investment programme we have ever delivered as we seek to enable a step change in environmental performance right across the region,” Beardmore said.

“I know we have much more to do, addressing the things that matter most to our customers and which benefit the region and I am committed to doing that…

“I look forward to working with many other organisations and partners across the North West as collaboration is key to the continued success of the place we all call home.”

This announcement is just to divert attention from this privatised monopoly massive increase in price of water which is totally unjustified and being done under cover of current high inflation.
