THING OF THE WEEK

BEE-HAVE… Do we really do things differently here? THING can’t help but become a little cynical when Manchester’s favourites keep being trotted out on a regular basis. Time to play “Manchester bingo” with this video from the city’s airport launching its new food & beverage offering at Terminal 2. Oasis lyrics? Tick. Ian Brown quote? Tick. Bees? Tick. Misquoted Tony Wilson? Tick. Hacienda yellow-and-black stripes? Tick. It’s pretty much a full house. While it’s great Manchester has a real identity to go with its growing status on the global stage, if the city really does do things differently, it might be time to get a little bit more creative…

CIH THING

FLEETWOOD FOLK… The Chartered Institute of Housing conference descended on Manchester Central this week, bringing with it the Prime Minister, all manner of housing associations, various Government figures, and plenty of people trying to sell you laminate flooring. An event that can sometimes can be hit-and-miss did certainly yield some good content this year, and some more surprising showcases, too; particularly Regenda and the Liverpool Philharmonic’s showcase of Fleetwood. The Fleetwood Voices project included a film outlining the town and its history accompanied by an original piece of music performed live and composed by John McHugh (no, not that one, a different one). It’s a nice example of where the worlds of property, housing, and the arts collide, so well worth a Google.

Eric Wright Ground Breaking

GUESS WHO’S BACK… THING gets plenty of news through about ground-breaking ceremonies, so it’s nice to see the return of the unnecessarily large spade to break up the monotony of middle-aged blokes in hard hats. Top marks to Trebor, Maple Grove, Eric Wright, Legat Owen and Welsh Government minister Ken Skates for holding up a completely impractical tool in the picture above, taken at a development that’s got under way in Deeside. However, eagle-eyed readers may recognise this particular spade: looks like THING has featured it before when Eric Wright started work on its Cotton Square development in Manchester in November 2017. They must have a particularly large tool shed to store it between outings.

Dino Falls Golf THING

DINOSAURS… What’s claimed to be the UK’s largest adventure golf course outside London is getting bigger after plans were approved to expand Dino Falls by the Trafford Centre. The course is getting another 18 holes, a volcano, and plenty more dinosaurs as it grows, and it also means it’ll be available for larger group bookings, which could provide a welcome change for those of you who embark on regular booze-ups  golf days. Although the nitpickers among us might point out that the golf course’s claim to be “Jurassic themed” is actually inaccurate, as we all know that the Triceratops is from the late Cretaceous period, the expansion will likely add to the venue’s popularity when it opens later this year.

Meadowside Yoga THING

YOGA… Here’s one for the stretchier members of the property community: developer FEC is holding free yoga sessions at its MeadowSide project, where it’s delivering 756 apartments around Manchester’s Angel Meadow. As you can see above, contractor Westfields Construction was among the first to be put through its paces, and there are more sessions taking place between 8am and 8:45am on 19 July, 16 August, and 20 September. Even if you’re not that flexible, it’s good to see Angel Meadow being brought back into regular use.
