TfGM releases final 2040 transport strategy

The final version of Greater Manchester’s transport strategy to 2040 has been published, outlining the long-term plan for all travel in the city region and detailing plans for road improvements, Metrolink expansion and train station investment.

The strategy covers a series of priorities to be addressed in the city region over the next 25 years. These include a mix of projects which have already been committed to, as well as schemes listed as ‘ongoing’ within the strategy period, which will be subject to feasibility studies.

A draft was first released in July 2016, and was put out to public consultation. According to Transport for Greater Manchester, more than 1,800 responses were received.

Some of the specific proposals within the transport strategy include:

  • Business case development for road improvements around Port Salford and Manchester Airport
  • Further development of Airport-Piccadilly HS2 route
  • New link from A57 at Mottram Moor to A57 at Woolley Bridge
  • Tunnelled Metrolink routes under the city centre by 2040
  • Masterplans for improvements at National Hub stations
  • A Piccadilly Hub masterplan
  • Expanding the Metrolink fleet to increase capacity on the busiest lines by introducing more double services
  • Potential strategic park and ride
  • Integrated fares and ticketing system, and work with Transport for the North to develop cross-modal payment system across the North
  • Conversion of less profitable heavy rail lines to Metrolink, potentially Wigan Wallgate via Atherton, Rose Hill and Glossop/Hadfield lines
  • Improvement schemes for the Inner Ring Road at Regent Road and Great Ancoats Street
  • New walking and cycling routes, working with the devolved health administration to work on plan which promotes healthy transit
  • Potential Clean Air Zone charge in Greater Manchester
  • Improvement of out-of-hours public transport, including transport which supports night time economies

Alongside the strategy sits a five-year delivery plan, detailing the first stage of implementation from 2016 – 2021. Together these documents make up the Greater Manchester Local Transport Plan. Progress on delivery of the plan is set to be reported on annually.

The Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2040 was developed by Transport for Greater Manchester on behalf of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Greater Manchester Local Enterprise Partnership.

2040 for Tunneled Metrolink lines? Is that a joke? 43 years to build a couple of lines,most European cities Manchester’s size take for granted.

Does it mention their systematic dismantling of the City’s road network? Remember this – TfGM have already admitted the only way they can encourage people to use public transport is to force motorists out of their cars.

‘Admitted’ is an emotive word; as is ‘force’. Encourage PT/discourage car use is an established strategy for enhancing transport.

It seems that TfGM is going to taking over from Network Rail in the Northwest , we’ll be going from bad to worse. Also it looks like The Ordsall Chord is going to be a £160 million pound white elephant , access for plenty of extra trains but nowhere to send them , without the extra platformst 15 and 16 at Piccadilly it’s useless.
