TCS revamps indoor market

Town Centre Securities has completed the refurbishment of Abingdon Street Market in Blackpool.

The work was funded with the help of a grant from Townscape Heritage Initiative through Blackpool Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund. The total cost of the project was £200,000. Eclipse Developments, based in Blackpool, was the main contractor.

The 1862 mock Tudor building was originally the town's police station, built by TH Smith, the main contractor for parts of the Winter Gardens. The main hall was built in 1928 when the building became a market hall.

Today, the indoor market has more than 60 stalls run by traders offering fruit, meat and fish, clothing and linen, jewellery, cosmetics, accessories, hair and beauty among others.

The market remained open throughout the three month refurbishment work.

David Donkin, associate director of Town Centre Securities, owner and manager of the market, said: "It's great to see this phase of work complete which significantly improves the look of the market and makes this part of Abingdon Street more attractive. We are committed to upgrading this important and historic market hall and will continue to invest in this busy town centre market."

Bob Littlewood, market manager, said: "The Abingdon Street Market is a thriving hub of activity popular with locals and tourists. We offer a traditional market with a range of stalls which appeals to those that want an alternative to supermarkets and shops in the centre of the town."
