Sankey Canal clean-up gathers pace
The renovation project for Sankey Canal linking Fiddlers Ferry Marina with Widnes has received a further £70,000 from two sources towards assessment works.
Waste Recycling Environmental has put in £50,000 and the Environment Agency £20,000. The funding matches an earlier £70,000 from the North West Development Agency's Revive land regeneration initiative, led by Cheshire West & Chester Council.
The derelict length of canal will be surveyed to assess its structural condition. There will also be studies of the park and water wildlife habitats.
A newly formed Project Working Group comprising representatives from the Environment Agency, Sankey Canal Restoration Society, Dallam and District Community Anglers Group and Scottish & Southern Power, are all working directly with the council on this pilot project to support, develop and oversee future improvement works.
Richard Tracey, head of environmental quality at the NWDA, said: "The Revive programme is helping to tackle the legacy of brownfield land in Cheshire and Warrington and to create vibrant, productive, high quality green spaces that stimulate economic activity. I am delighted the additional funding will enhance the site further."
