Russells starts on £17m final phase of Vulcan Mill

Contractor Russells has started work on the final phase of the redevelopment of Manchester’s Vulcan Mill in Ancoats, breaking ground on a new-build seven-storey apartment block.

Designed by architect MPSL, the block off Malta Street sits next to the 19th-century Vulcan Mill which was refurbished in 2007 to house 120 apartments. The site by the Ashton Canal basin was until recently used as a temporary car park.

Developer Artisan Investments appointed Russells as preferred contractor for the scheme in 2017, and the contractor has now started on a 103-week build programme to deliver the block by 2020.

It features 68 two-bed apartments and 33 one-beds, along with 82 parking spaces with 44 at basement level. The scheme, named The Loom, will be built from pre-cast concrete panels with brickwork cladding.

Gareth Russell, director of Russells Construction, said: “We know this area well, having been involved with earlier phases of the wider Ancoats residential regeneration, building The Cube and The Mews for Manchester City Council and Peel.

“Together with Artisan, we’ve developed a scheme which will bring another 101 new homes to the city centre and continue to regenerate and revitalise this part of the city.

“We’re conscious there are many hundreds of people already living in neighbouring Artisan developments at Vulcan Mill Phase 1 and Albion Works, and we’ll do our best to minimise disruption and keep residents informed throughout the project.”
