Residents delay cancer research centre
The planning decision over a new £20m cancer research centre at Christie Hospital in Withington, south Manchester was deferred on Thursday pending a site visit by councillors to inspect the parking arrangements.
Objectors to the planning application by Manchester Cancer Research Centre, a partnership between the university, Cancer Research UK and the Christie Cancer Centre, questioned the impact on traffic and parking in Wilmslow Road.
Work on the 63,000 sq ft centre was scheduled to start in May 2012. The scheme was designed by Samlesbury-based architecture practice Wilson Mason & Partners.
The decision was due yesterday by Manchester City Council's planning committee but councillors agreed to a site visit to gauge the traffic and parking concerns before they make their decision.
