Recreation spaces protected as legacy of 2012
Nine outdoor recreation spaces in the borough of Cheshire West & Chester have been safeguarded after being designated Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge sites.
The sites have gained protection from development as part of a scheme to provide a permanent living legacy of the Diamond Jubilee, London Olympics and Paralympics.
The sites are
- Westminster Park, Chester
- Wharfe Lane Play Area, Ellesmere Port
- Whitby Park, Ellesmere Port
- Rivacre Valley Park, Ellesmere Port
- Growzone, Northwich
- Park Fields, Parkgate, Neston
- Edgar's Field, Handbridge, Chester
- Shelley Road open space, Blacon, Chester
- Knights Grange, Winsford
Members of the public were asked to nominate sites for selection by the Fields in Trust.
Helen Griffiths, chief executive of Fields in Trust said: "I am delighted that Cheshire West & Chester Council has shown how much they value their community and its future by preserving their green spaces through the QEII Fields Challenge.
"Community green spaces such as these play such a vital role in maintaining a high quality of life for those around them."
Diifciult to understand how sites such as Westminster Park and Whitby Park could ever be under pressure of development! Surely the rationale behind the intiative was to protect sites where there might be some real pressure from development; such as those in the greenbelt.
