Recession strikes at Carphone Warehouse scheme
Plans for a £7m revamp of an historic Preston Mill have been scaled down due to the effects of the recession.
Owners Carphone Warehouse have scrapped plans for 51 apartments as part of the Grade II listed Tulketh Mill project on Balcarres Road in Ashton. Instead, it will include more shopping space, along with the original plans for a restaurant/bar and shops when it submits a new set of proposals to the council's planning committee next Monday.
The building currently houses 1,200 call centre workers on the first, second and third floors. The fourth level will be used for self-storage.
The new plans include four retail showrooms covering 12,464 sq ft, rather than the 8,094 sq ft originally planned.
The original scheme, which was approved in March 2007, included the conversion of the engine room section of the mill, plus a five-storey extension for the apartments.
