Ramboll recruits two Manchester directors

Carl Wells and Richard Smith have joined the global engineering and design firm to bolster its sustainability offerings.

In joining Ramboll from Cundall, Wells and Smith have gone up the ranks – losing the “associate” in their former “associate director” title. As directors at Ramboll, the two will work on large-scale projects in various sectors – from leisure to commercial, education to retail, residential to science.

Each has more than 20 years of experience in engineering, with Wells having particular expertise regarding sustainable electrical systems. Becoming a director at Ramboll marks a return to the company for Wells, who formerly worked in the firm’s London and Dubai offices. In his latest role at Ramboll, Wells will help the building services team deliver net zero power schemes. Wells’ background also includes roles at Laing O’Rourke and WSP, as well as at the aforementioned Cundall.

Smith’s expertise lies in ultra-low-carbon design and the NABERS evaluation system. In addition to Cundall, he also worked at King Associates, NDY, and Foreman Roberts in the past.

Smith and Wells will work out of Ramboll’s Manchester office at Arkwright House off Parsonage Gardens.

Jason Layfield, the UK executive director of buildings at Ramboll, welcomed Wells and Smith to the Manchester office team.

“The breadth and depth of their combined skills and experience, particularly in the delivery of low-carbon projects, will further strengthen our service delivery,” Layfield said of the two new directors.

“Both Carl and Richard are well-known in the industry for their expertise in sustainability and I look forward to seeing them put that to use to support our clients in the transition to net zero,” Layfield said.
