Plans unveiled for Ulverston Police Station overhaul
Vacated by the force in 2015, the constabulary buildings would be transformed to create office space, serviced apartments, and houses under plans submitted to Westmorland and Furness Council.
Architect and engineering firm Building Design Northern is leading the multi-million-pound scheme, seeking to deliver the mixed-use development off Neville Street in the South Lakeland town of Ulverston.
If approved, the former Ulverston Police Station would be reimagined to provide office space, while jail cells would be transformed into boutique, serviced apartments.
Further flats would be created where the superintendent’s headquarters once stood. These headquarters were demolished prior to BDN’s acquisition of the site.
Opposite, the former courthouse would feature a restaurant pavilion. Surrounding MOT garages would be converted to provide shops, as well as three one- and two-bedroom homes.
Approval would also see BDN relocate its own offices to the site, with a communal kitchen, meeting room, and desk space proposed to accommodate the expanding firm. The company originated in Sunderland and established its Ulverston base in 2018.
Director of architecture and head of BDN’s Ulverston office, Joe Warner, said: “As a local business, we are proud to be playing a part in the transformation of a historic Ulverston landmark and investing back into the area we care deeply about.
“Our investment in the former police station demonstrates our commitment to deliver fantastic developments, which will bring more people into the area, as our business establishes a larger base in Ulverston.”
Plans are expected to go before Westmorland and Furness Council’s planning committee in summer 2023, with work expected to start soon after.
The project’s planning application is not yet available to view on the council’s planning portal.
Sounds a great scheme. Ulverston is a bit of a hidden gem – a delightful town, full of independent traders and decent boozers. Well worth a detour.
