Your Housing starts on former Openshaw industrial site

Work has begun on 216 homes at the east Manchester development, where Lovell Partnerships is working with the housing provider.

The development at the former GE Alstom site on Edge Lane will be known as Edgefield Green, and will include one- and two-bedroom apartments and two-, three- and four-bedroom houses with a mix of terrace, semi-detached and detached properties.

Edwards Architecture has designed the homes. The homes will be available for affordable tenures with 95 for shared ownership, 52 rent to buy, 51 affordable rent, and 18 social rent. There will be 168 houses and 48 apartments.

The project is being delivered through YHG’s strategic partnership with Homes England, the RSL having been announced in January 2019 as one of the housing agency’s partners, receiving £87.5m of funding.     ,

Jacque Allen, deputy chief executive for YHG, said: “It is fantastic to see work underway at Edgefield Green. Thanks to the support of Manchester City Council, this development will allow us to transform the site of a disused warehouse into a wonderful, vibrant community for Openshaw, with excellent links to Manchester, and close to parks and schools.”

Consent was granted in autumn 2020, with Barton Willmore avising on planning. Lovell was appointed to YHG’s partner framework in February.

Cllr Gavin White, Manchester City Council’s executive member for housing and employment, said: “The bottom line is that we need more affordable homes in every part of the city – there is no area of Manchester with low demand – so every development that comes online that increases the number of homes accessible to our residents should be celebrated. Particularly homes with one and two bedrooms, which are in short supply currently.”

Completion is due in 2024.
