Work begins on Booths store at Media City

The fit-out of the new food and drink store has started at the Salford Quays site after contracts were exchanged with developers Peel Media.

Planning permission for the new 23,000 sq ft food store was approved last year and it is anticipated that it will officially open for business in autumn 2011.

Booths will occupy two floors positioned below the Media City UK multi storey car park and will offer visitors and residents a vast range of locally sourced food and drink.

The family owned chain has 26 food stores across Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria and Cheshire.

The company was founded in 1847 by tea merchant Edwin Henry Booth and is committed to sourcing products that are fresh from the counties it serves including Lancashire, Cheshire, Cumbria and Yorkshire.

Peel Media has invested £650m in phase one of Media City UK and has dedicated approximately 80,000 sq ft of space for retail and leisure. WHSmith and international coffee brand Costa Coffee will open later this year, as phase one draws near to completion.

Stephen Wild, managing director of real estate for Peel Media, said: "We are happy that work is underway for the new Booths store here at Media City UK. Booths have an established presence in the north of England and we are delighted that Media City UK will be their first Greater Manchester location. As an award-winning brand we are confident that Booths will provide an excellent service to the residents and visitors at Media City UK."

Media City is the new home for BBC North, ITV, Satellite Information Services and the Salford University.
