Residential change of use approved for old cricket ground
Mosaic Town Planning has obtained permission on behalf of MCI Developments and Great Places Housing Association for 67 homes on three acres formerly occupied by Weaste Cricket Ground in Salford.
The proposal included 58 affordable units and nine for market sale.
The site was last used as a temporary car park for the adjacent former Salford Reds Rugby Ground which has now been demolished after the rugby league club moved to a new stadium.
While the site was designated as Protected Recreational Land, it was demonstrated that it was surplus to recreational requirements. It has been vacant for a number of years and became increasingly untidy, overgrown and unsecure.
The cricket club relocated to merge with Monton Cricket Club and Mosaic argued there was no realistic prospect of the site being brought forward for recreational use. The applicant offered a financial contribution towards the provision or improvement of sports pitches in the locality.
The council recognised that the site's redevelopment for housing would contribute regeneration benefits to Weaste, an area which has been subject to initiatives designed to stabilise the local housing market.
