Orbit plots self-storage scheme at Sale’s Citygate

The developer has put forward proposals to demolish an existing commercial unit off Cross Street, next to its Citygate development, and build a 24,000 sq ft self-storage unit in its place.

The plans, submitted to Trafford Council in outline form, will see a vacant 14,000 sq ft unit next to the Shell garage knocked down. This was formerly a Citroen car showroom but has been vacant for around four years.

Orbit said that despite “extensive marketing and refreshing, the unit remains vacant and another use for this site appears the only way to bring it back into beneficial use”.

The proposals are being brought forward by Orbit through its Investment Properties North West business. The planned building will be three storeys, at a similar height to neighbouring offices and a hotel at Citygate.

A “contemporary” design with a mixed brick and glazed façade is being put forward for the building.

Citygate is a multi-use commercial development off Cross Street; it includes a Travelodge, which was converted from a former Sun Microsystems office a number of years ago, and another office building which is currently occupied by Laing O’Rourke. There is also a TGI Friday’s restaurant.
