New Mersey set for £60m revamp

Plans for the £60m refurbishment of New Mersey Shopping Park in Speke, South Liverpool, are due to get the go-ahead this week, allowing for the development of a seven-screen Cineworld cinema, six restaurants and a revamp of the park’s 31 retail units.

A report ahead of Liverpool City Council’s planning committee meeting on Tuesday 28 July has recommended the scheme be approved.

The plans from owner Speke Unit Trust would create a new gateway to the retail park, with the cinema and restaurants located at the front of the site replacing the current Currys unit.

Alongside the development of the 45,000 sq ft cinema, the proposals include the reconfiguration of a large B&Q unit to create smaller units, the construction of 12 retail units, and a reworked car park.

According to a council report, “the head of planning is satisfied that the scheme will be a valuable and exciting addition to the existing retail park offer that will bring significant benefits to users in terms of facilities, improved movement within the site and an improved physical environment utilising a modern architectural approach.”

Plans from ANSA Logistics for a cinema-led leisure scheme on a 49-acre site next to New Mersey Shopping Park were approved by Liverpool City Council in 2012. However, according to the New Mersey application, ANSA’s scheme does not yet have permission as section 106 agreements are yet to be signed. Ford sub-leases the land until 2043, “so there is no real prospect of that scheme coming forward”.

The council report said that the head of planning agreed with Speke Unit Trust’s conclusions.
