New £70m university campus planned for Hulme

An education and training campus costing £70m is being proposed by Manchester Metropolitan University and Manchester City Council in Hulme.

A masterplan is being put forward for a campus, called Birley Fields, aimed at complementing the regeneration of the Oxford Road area and help create jobs and services for residents in Hulme and neighbouring Moss Side.

The new campus will replace MMU campuses in Rusholme and Didsbury and has environmental sustainability at the heart of the plans.

Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, said: "This new campus will be a world-class development benefiting Hulme, neighbouring areas and the city as a whole. It will bring not just new jobs but also improved educational and community facilities. I'm particularly pleased to see that environmental sustainability will also be at the heart of its design."

The scheme has been an on-going consideration for MMU, which did originally explore ideas to expand its Didsbury campus.

A public consultation on the Hulme plans begins late spring and a masterplan will be published in the near future.
