MIPIM 2015: ECf picks AHMM and Make for New Bailey offices

English Cities Fund has appointed Make Architects and AHMM Architects to design two office buildings of 200,000 sq ft each in the next phases of the New Bailey scheme.

Make, headed by founder Ken Shuttleworth, has a reputation for striking designs. ECf said Make emerged from the pitches as "clearly the best practice for the City Wharf site at New Bailey", next to the One New Bailey building already on site. One New Bailey will; contain 125,000 sq ft and was designed by RHWL Architects.

Shuttleworth said: "This is a fantastic opportunity to create a gateway building for the New Bailey masterplan, connecting the ongoing regeneration of the Salford central area with the booming Manchester central business district."

AHMM will design a third office building on the other side of One New Bailey close to the newly completed multi-storey car park.

Simon Allford from AHMM said: "The emerging masterplan at New Bailey will create a new city quarter. AHMM is delighted to be involved with this new phase in the city's continued development and we look forward to further developing ideas that take the ambition for the masterplan through to the detail of a characterful, efficient and delightful 21st century place for working and playing."

Bill Hughes, head of real estate at Legal & General Investment Management spoke at the Manchester Villa event, along with ECf's development director Phil Mayall and Karen Hirst, development director for Salford City Council.

Hughes commented: "Public private partnerships are the key to unlocking UK economic growth. We choose to work with enlightened local authorities to deliver major regeneration. Looking beyond London and the South East, this is about identifying regional strongholds where we can deliver value over the long term, working closely with partners that are aligned to our vision and wider social purpose. Growing in positive momentum, Salford is a great example of this approach, creating jobs, homes, business space, public realm and much more."

Phil Mayall, director of Muse, lead development partner in ECf, said of the scheme: "We are very pleased to be officially launching New Bailey at MIPIM and it provided the perfect opportunity to announce that we will be working with AHMM and Make.

"Appointing both architects at the same time sends a clear message to occupiers that we are creating a product that has their requirements at its core. It also allows us to target a wider range of potential occupiers ranging from design orientated TMT through to major corporates."

ECf is a joint venture between Muse Developments, Legal & General and the Homes & Communities Agency.
