Metquarter bags youth fashion retailer

Kids Cavern has signed for a 15,000 sq ft unit at Liverpool’s Metquarter, as the first major retail signing of Queensberry’s drive to redevelop and reposition the centre.

Billed as a department store specifically designed for children, Kids Cavern was established in 1989, and carries clothing and shoes from brands including Fendi, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Kenzo Kids, Roberto Cavalli Junior, Armani Junior, Hugo Boss, Canada Goose, and Moncler.

The store will also include a soda bar, iPad stations and chill out areas for parents. All of this will be laid out on one level enabling easy access and manoeuvring for customers, especially those with prams.

Stuart Harris, commercial director and co-founder of Queensberry said: “Kids Cavern is exactly the kind of retailer we want for Metquarter, they will complement our other tenants and bring a host of quality brands in an environment that will provide a unique customer experience.

“This is another important step in moving towards our vision of revitalising and repositioning Metquarter as a premium shopping and leisure experience in the heart of Liverpool. We’re currently in negotiation with several other exciting retail and restaurant brands that we’re hoping to reveal over the next few months.”

The 130,000 sq ft Metquarter opened in 2006 but has struggled to compete with the much larger Liverpool One. The redevelopment will see 20,000 sq ft of restaurant space added, including new terraced areas, as Queensberry seeks to make it more of a leisure destination.

Last year, boutique cinema operator Everyman was announced as leisure anchor for the scheme. Queensberry received planning permission for the proposed changes last year and work started on the works in January, with Simons Group as main contractor.

The redevelopment project involves bringing restaurant brands to the Victoria Street end of Metquarter with luxury retail concentrated on the lower level and the front of the centre.

Brands already located at Metquarter include MAC, Hugo Boss, Jo Malone, Kurt Geiger and LK Bennett. Among Queensberry’s other projects is Manchester’s Corn Exchange.

This is such a beautiful building and it’s such a shame that it hasn’t been invested in and had good planning and management behind it over the years. Hopefully the new management will do more to raise its profile and bring more people in. Hoping that getting around the building from both sides becomes easier as well.

Hopefully the addition of Kids Cavern will be a major boost for the space, their presence will ensure all of the Scouse molls come through the doors to cloth their kiddies in their designer gear – everyones a winner!
