Maloneview progresses £65m Sale town centre revamp
A public consultation is to be held next week on a £65m plan to overhaul Sale’s The Square shopping centre, which could include a cinema, retail space, and apartments.
Developer Maloneview is planning a comprehensive overhaul of the town centre, including the partial demolition of The Square and the construction of up to 37,000 sq ft of retail, a 22,000 sq ft cinema, and up to 205 residential units.
The number of residential units has been reduced from 215 since an environmental impact assessment report was submitted by planner Barton Willmore to Trafford Council last month, ahead of a full planning application. SimpsonHaugh is the architect, with Exterior Architecture working on the public realm proposals. BDP is appointed on multidisciplinary engineering, including acoustics, lighting, C&S, and ecology.
The proposals for the five-acre site could include buildings of up to 15 storeys in height. The redevelopment could also include extensive public realm enhancements, landscaping, and new road access along Sibson Road.
The three-storey Sibson House office block, as well as six retail units and a multi-storey car park would all be demolished to make way for the development, but the Acre House car park and the retail units below would be retained.
Maloneview will launch the public consultation at two events next week, to be held in The Square: one on Thursday 16 November between 4pm and 8pm, and another on Saturday 18 November between 11am and 3pm.
Mark Rebbeck, commercial director at Maloneview, said: “Our £65m mixed-use regeneration scheme will provide much needed new housing in the town centre, but will also deliver extensive new areas of improved streetscape and landscaping, a cinema and new restaurants in a plaza to the south.
“The new and enhanced facilities will widen the appeal of Sale as a key shopping and leisure destination, delivering hundreds of new jobs and increasing footfall in the local area.
“Over November, we will be consulting on our full planning application for The Square Shopping Centre and we want to encourage members of the public and local residents to attend our consultation events and have their say to help shape these exciting plans for the town centre.”
Maloneview’s plans form part of a wider redevelopment of the town centre, which is being backed by both private and public funding.
The public part of the revamp, backed by Trafford Council, includes an overhaul of public realm along Northenden Road, School Road, and Waterside Plaza in the centre of Sale, with a focus on improving public spaces, gateways and arrival points, and parking.
Landscape architects Planit-IE and engineering firm Civic Engineers have been appointed to develop the proposals.
