MAG appoints group chief executive

Ken O’Toole will step into the role in October, taking over the reins from Charlie Cornish who has led the business for 13 years.

Cornish will remain at Manchester Airport Group, replacing Sir Adrian Montague, who is retiring, as chair of the company.

Charlie Cornish, group chief executive of MAG, said: “The last 13 years have been an incredible time for aviation…

“Through all that, it’s been a great privilege for me to build and lead the UK’s largest airports group, working with a fantastic team of colleagues to grow the organisation and our contribution to the UK economy”, he continued.

“I am delighted that Ken will be succeeding me as chief executive, and I look forward to supporting MAG’s continued growth as its chair over the coming years.”

O’Toole is taking on the role of group chief executive of MAG after 11 years at the group.

Currently deputy group chief executive, O’Toole has held several senior roles at the company since he joined in 2012 including chief commercial officer, chief executive of London Stansted Airport, and chief executive of Manchester Airport.

Previous roles also include head of revenue management and director of new route development at Ryanair Holdings, where he worked for six years.

MAG is the owner and operator of Manchester Airport, London Stansted Airport, and East Midlands Airport, as well as its digital travel services business, CAVU.

In September, the group reported that it has seen an operating profit of £22.8m in the first half of this financial year, improved from a loss of £75.7m in 2021 due to the pandemic. MAG also saw its revenue increase by 239.5% to £538.8m, compared to the previous financial year.

The recent promotions ensure continuity within the company during a period of major investment.

Currently, Manchester Airport is undergoing a £1.3bn transformation. The airport’s first passenger pier and new multi-storey car park were launched in April 2019, while the new-look Terminal Two in opened in July 2021.

Last month, the group announced that it is seeking tenders for the final £440m phase of improvements, which will see 27 shops and restaurants join Terminal Two in summer 2025.
