Lucass joins GeoSmart

The Shrewsbury-based environmental consultancy has hired Martin Lucass as commercial director to head up the North West, as the firm looks to expand across the region.

Lucass, a chartered geologist, joins from Ensafe, formerly REC, where he spent just under two years as director.

He had previously worked for more than a decade at civil engineer WSP where he rose through the ranks, starting out as a graduate hydrogeologist in 2008 and eventually becoming principal hydrogeologist in 2016.

GeoSmart, founded in 2013 by Mark Fermor, provides flood risk, drainage, groundwater and contaminated land expertise to architects, planning consultants, developers, legal practitioners and local authorities.

Lucass, who joins a team of 14, will be based in Manchester but, as GeoSmart does not have an office in the city, the exact location has yet to be decided. He will work alongside managing director Paul Ellis.

Lucass said: “With a technical background in hydrogeology and contaminated land, I have a breadth of experience in remediation, coal mining, drainage, flooding and human health risk assessment

“Joining during the Covid-19 outbreak has made for a rather different first week with all my conversations done via video calls. It is fortunate that the business operates on the Cloud and we are able to function normally.

“I’m looking forward to working with GeoSmart to expand our network across the North West over the coming years.”

Lucass is also treasurer of the independent Forum for the Built Environment committee.
