Laing O’Rourke eyes Great Jackson Street towers
The contractor is understood to be in talks to build DeTrafford’s Transition in Manchester, featuring three towers of 37, 31, and 23 storeys providing 399 apartments.
Place North West understands Laing O’Rourke is currently in a pr-construction services agreement with the developer to deliver the project, part of an ever-growing tower cluster on the edge of the city centre.
Designed by architect SimpsonHaugh, the development will include nearly 400 apartments, along with 50 retirement flats, a rooftop restaurant, and 7,200 sq ft of commercial space. The three towers will sit above a five-storey podium, with the taller tower situated towards the north of the site. A planning application was lodged for the scheme in September 2017, and was approved the following year.
The site borders Renaker’s Deansgate Square, including Manchester’s tallest building, and sits within the Great Jackson Street masterplan area, which will create 6,000 homes within a series of high-rise towers.
Other proposals to come forward so far include plans by architect Hodder + Partners for two towers of 36 and 31 storeys along Great Jackson Street itself. A public consultation was held on the scheme earlier this month.
As well as Deansgate Square, Renaker is also well under way with its scheme at Crown Street, featuring a 52-storey tower.
If Laing O’Rourke secures its deal with DeTrafford for Transition, it will be the second major contract win for the firm in recent months.
In March, Place North West revealed the company was also on board to deliver the £200m St Michael’s, and had brought in global architect Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the firm behind the Burj Khalifa, as part of its team.
Elsewhere in the city, Laing O’Rourke is currently on site at the University of Manchester’s £150m Henry Royce Institute, and is the construction partner for The Factory, a £130.6m cultural and arts centre.
Laing O’Rourke and DeTrafford were contacted for comment.
