Kier appointed on Nuffield Manchester scheme

Kier Construction has been appointed by Nuffield Health to build a £70m private hospital at a former Manchester Metropolitan University campus on Hathersage Road.

The project signals Kier’s expansion into the private health sector and will provide more than 90,000 sq ft of facilities over three floors, including five operating theatres, an imaging and diagnostic suite, 50 patient rooms and 30 consultation rooms.

Construction is due to begin later this year with a completion date of spring 2019. Pozzoni is the architect on the scheme.

John O’Callaghan, Kier Construction’s north region managing director, said: “We’re looking forward to developing the strong working relationship we have built with Nuffield Health in the pre-construction phase of the project.

“Kier has built over £2bn of healthcare facilities in the past 12 years and we’ll be using our experience and expertise in this sector to ensure we deliver a world class facility for patients.”

Nuffield acquired the five-acre Elizabeth Gaskell campus in summer 2014 and first went for planning in November 2015 with a 130,000 sq ft scheme. That consent has since been updated.

The professional team includes Deloitte as planning consultant, BuroHappold on site contamination and remediation issues, Silkstone Environmental and Greenwood Construction on health & safety.
