K2 makes list of potential Moorside architects
Liverpool-based K2 Architects’ design for a visitor centre and office at NuGen’s Moorside site is among six to be shortlisted by the nuclear plant developer, as it seeks “the best design thinking in the world” to influence its West Cumbria project.
K2 was the only North West practice to make the list, alongside Graeme Massie Architects, FaulknerBrown Architects, Reiach & Hall, William Matthews Associates and CF.Architects.

The eventual winning architects will have the chance to bid for a contract to support NuGen’s design work for aspects of the Moorside project, which will see a new nuclear power plant built close to the existing Sellafield complex in West Cumbria.
In January 2016, NuGen commissioned the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Landscape Institute to run independent design competitions for architects and landscape architects respectively.

NuGen said that the designs were from independent architects and not intended to be part of its proposed scheme. However, depending on the response from the public, NuGen said it may be able to incorporate elements of the entries into the project.
K2 director, Mark Davies said: “Cumbria is a totally unique place, the chance to work alongside NuGen and deliver a world class visitor centre is hugely exciting opportunity for all of us. Our building will embrace sustainable design, creating a research and learning destination, as well as a valuable recreational resource for local people that will have positive legacy for the future.”
The finalists’ concept designs will now form part of NuGen’s public consultation which will last for 11 weeks and will include more than 28 public events across the county. NuGen suggests a total of 21,000 jobs will be created during the lifetime of the plant and hopes construction will begin in 2020.
