Hotel group to spend £15m on third Chester hotel

Walker & Williams has lodged plans to redevelop derelict buildings on Nicholas Street next to Chester Racecourse to create a 52-bedroom hotel, and refurbish eight residential properties on the same street.

The five-star hotel would feature a restaurant, rooftop pool and a terrace with views overlooking the racecourse.

Two grade two-listed townhouses, 26 and 28 Nicholas Street, would house the proposed hotel. The buildings have been vacant for three years having most recently been used as offices.

Walker & Williams’ plans also include the restoration of six mews properties on the street as well as two three-storey townhouses.

The group said it would invest £15m in delivering the scheme, creating 136 jobs.

PWA Planning is the planner for the project and Preston-based architect FWP designed the scheme.

Walker & Williams, founded in 2016, operates five hotels across the North West, two in Chester, one in Ormskirk and two in Preston.

Max Walker-Williams, co-founder of Walker & Williams, said: The plans for Nicholas Street have been a long time in the making and I’m delighted that the planning application for our flagship aparthotel is now up and running.

“We’ve been in discussions about the project with the council, local enterprise partnership, Marketing Cheshire and others for several months to make sure we get the new aparthotel just right for Chester.

“The encouragement and support we have had so far has been tremendous. There is clear desire from the council and others to see investment like ours come forward and I can’t wait to hear what people think of our vision.”
