Gary Neville’s hotel plans approved

Detailed planning permission was granted on Thursday night by Trafford Council for a hotel and leisure complex near Manchester United FC's football ground to be developed by Gary Neville and Old Trafford Supporters Club.

The AEW Architects-designed project on Sir Matt Busby Way will include a 139-bed hotel, bar, restaurant and shop. The development is a joint venture by the footballer-turned-commentator, using proceeds from his testimonial game, and the supporters club.

Manchester United FC reportedly objected to the plans on various grounds such as inadequate parking and concerns that it would not be open to general public. The club is understood to have had its own plans for the site.

Anthony Kilbride of development manager Red Property Services said: "We are delighted with the planning decision last night and look forward to working with the project team over the coming months to get this exciting scheme onto site as quickly as possible. The aim is to get the building open for the start of the 2014/15 football season."

Steve Burne, managing director of AEW Architects, said: "We've worked with Gary Neville on several projects and are delighted the application for the supporters' club has been approved, this is a genuine chance for Gary to give something back to the fans.

"A lot of time was invested in the design stage so that we could be sure the building will provide a true match day experience for the fans. It is a significant project that will attract attention from around the world, and one that draws on AEW's experience in the hotel and leisure sectors."
