Ganotis takes over as Stockport Council leader

Stockport Council has confirmed Labour councillor Alex Ganotis as leader at its annual meeting last night, the first time in 18 years that the council has not been led by a Liberal Democrat.

Ganotis takes over from Sue Derbyshire, who lost her seat in the local elections earlier this month to Cllr Charlie Stewart.

Derbyshire also held the position of housing and planning lead for the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities. The role is currently being filled on a temporary basis by interim mayor Tony Lloyd, until Derbyshire’s replacement is announced in June.

Following the elections, Stockport is in no overall control, although Labour is the biggest party with 23 councillors.

Ganotis said: “Labour will have unlocking the enormous economic and social potential of Stockport as our key focus running through every decision which the council takes under our leadership.

“The new Labour executive for Stockport is highly competent and will ensure economic responsibility and common sense run throughout decision-making.

“At a time when some tough decisions are going to be needed due to the Government imposing cuts on Stockport, Labour is committed to ensuring that fairness is at the heart of the provision of our local public services.”
