First GM Mayoral debate takes place tonight

Mayoral Debate Sponsor Logo UpdatedThis evening the three main candidates for Greater Manchester Mayor are due to take part in a live debate at The Midland in central Manchester in the first event of its kind, organised by Place North West, in association with Lovell Partnerships, Iceni Projects and PPS Group.

This free-to-attend debate in front of 300 guests from across the property community is viewed by the leading candidates as their first main hustings encounter in the race to become metro mayor for Manchester, a new role under the devolution agreement with Government.

After the election on 4 May, the winner will chair the combined authority for the 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester and ultimately be responsible for executing special powers over transport, planning, spending and driving economic policy for the city region, setting the tone for Greater Manchester’s role at the heart of the Northern Powerhouse agenda.

The three candidates taking part are:

  • Conservatives: Sean Anstee
  • Labour: Andy Burnham
  • Liberal Democrats: Jane Brophy

This evening’s debate will be chaired by Paul Unger, editor of Place North West. Candidates will deliver their opening addresses before taking questions from the audience. Dozens of questions have been sent in already by registered attendees ahead of the debate.

Even if you are not in the room you can still follow the debate online using the #GMMayor hashtag on Twitter.

This event is fully subscribed and there are no further places available. Attendance is strictly by prior registration only.

Who will be the most NIMBY?

By Nordyne

Nordyne- that’s easy. It will be Jane Brophy.

By Gene Walker

Think we know who the winner will be and HOPE is not Tory Boy who lacked ambition in Trafford….

By Schwyz

Who is Jane Brophy? Never heard of her.I know Sean Anstee and he talks a lot of sense, but Burnham gets my vote, not because I’m over fussed about him,but because Manchester needs a big name,so we can grow internationally.Perhaps Mayor Burnham should put Sean Anstee in charge of Education, because Trafford outperforms everywhere in the region for schools.Sort Transport out Andy.We want the same standards London has had for decades and proper integration. No more of these piecemeal companies, fleecing everybody.
