Engineer changes name to match Swedish parent
Manchester-based engineering consultancy Grontmij has rebranded as Sweco, marking the final integration following its acquisition by the Swedish group last October.
Sweco has 14,500 employees, sales of approximately SEK16bn (£1.3bn) and is listed on Nasdaq Stockholm. Grontmij was a Netherlands-headquartered company.
In the UK, the company employs 800 people and has particular expertise in the fields of energy, transportation, environment, asset management, sustainable buildings and water.
Grontmij UK has two offices in Manchester, one on Oxford Street in the city centre and the second at Manchester Airport. There are a total of 24 people working across both offices in transport planning, energy, asset management and building services.
Sweco UK managing director, Max Joy, said: “Our rebrand represents the next step of our successful integration of Grontmij into Sweco. We are Europe’s leading engineering consultancy and are already providing our UK clients with the benefits that this combined knowledge and experience brings.
“The UK construction industry is resurgent and presents us and our clients with a multitude of opportunities. Sweco has a distinct, intelligent approach to the way it consults which is insight-driven and dedicated to planning and designing the communities and cities of the future. We are confident this formula will prove as successful here as it does throughout mainland Europe and the world.”
Current projects include engineering for a range of renewable projects and the supporting of proposed developments in energy, mixed-use residential, commercial and industrial developments. A major project for the Manchester energy team is Nemo Link, a consortium between the UK National Grid and Belgium power grid operator Elia. Grontmij UK has been appointed by Siemens to lead the project, which will connect subsea cables and build converter stations and an electricity substation in both countries to connect electricity flow between the two.”
There are further Sweco UK offices in Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, London, Maidenhead, Newcastle, Peterborough and Solihull.
