Digital light festival to illuminate Salford Quays
Next month Quays Culture is set to host Lightwaves, an outdoor light exhibition showcasing local, national and international artists’ digital light displays at Salford Quays and MediaCityUK.
Commencing on 9 December, this annual free event will run until Sunday 18 December and features nine artworks in public spaces. The displays will span Salford Quays, from the Plaza between The Lowry and the Lowry Outlet, to MediaCityUK’s Piazza, and the River Irwell.
Quays Culture is an organisation, supported by the Quays Partnership, which leads on the development of the Quays as a cultural destination and delivers outdoor arts and cultural events throughout the year.
This year will see Quays Culture collaborate with Blackpool Illuminations, showcasing items from Blackpool’s light collection which reflect the location of MediaCityUK as home to the BBC. Installations include Dr Who Daleks, the Tardis, Noddy, Postman Pat, as well as a forest of LED trees.
A large-scale artwork co-commissioned with Blackpool Illuminations for the festival is ‘Heart Beat’, created by GNI Projects as part of their ‘Light Love Collection’ a series of art installations using mixed lighting media to create the symbol of a heart.
As part of its global tour, ‘Voyage’, created by Aether & Hemera, features a 6,781 sq ft installation of 198 origami boats of which passers by can change the colour and pattern using a mobile phone, by connecting to Voyage Wi-Fi and visiting voyage.co.uk.
The festival includes digital workshops for all ages from 9 December to 11 December and an artist talk with GNI Projects and Aether & Hemera on 10 December.
Lightwaves 2016 will run daily from 12pm–10.30pm.
