Designs unveiled for new Accrington square
The first concepts for the new-look Accrington town centre proposed by economic development agency Elevate East Lancashire have been released.
Accrington is one of six towns in the area set to receive new public spaces as part of the Pennine Lancashire Squared international architecture contest. The other towns are Burnley, Blackburn, Bacup, Clitheroe and Nelson.
The identity of the designers behind the four images has been kept secret to maintain the integrity of the judging process currently ongoing.

The shortlisted architects for Accrington's square are:

- Landscape Projects
- McChesney Architects
- Balmori Associates
- Taylor Young
In total 25 architects were shortlisted for the six towns. The winners are due to be announced by May.
The competition is being run by the Landscape Institute, the chartered body for landscape architects, with the support of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
