Demolition of Preston Indoor Market to begin in March 2018

Muse Developments has issued tender documents for the demolition of Preston’s Indoor Market, moving its £50m cinema, leisure and retail development in the city a step closer.

The Market Quarter development includes an 11-screen cinema, seven family restaurants, and a 593-space multi-storey car park.

Place North West understands demolition will start following the relocation of some of the Indoor Market’s current tenants to the new covered market, which is due to begin in December this year, and the neighbouring Box Market, which will complete in early 2018.

The demolition of the 1970s two-level Indoor Market is said to be highly complex with a range of issues including site constraints and asbestos. There will also be a façade retention of the existing Lancastria House.

Muse is yet to appoint a main contractor for the replacement development, but it is understood work will start on the project in early 2019 following the clearance of the site.

Plans for the leisure development on the site were granted in November 2016.

The project has been designed by architect Benoy, and the professional team also includes CBRE as planning consultant, Curtins as civil engineering and transport consultant, and Waterman as building services and structural engineer.

I do hope the development of the cinema, family restaurants and car parking does go ahead. It will be a truly transformational development for Preston. Good news re the introduction of a fish counter in the Penwortham Booths as well.
