DataCentred signs at Sharp Project

Open source cloud computing company DataCentred has agreed terms to occupy up to 58,000 sq ft at the Sharp Project, Manchester's digital content production complex.

DataCentred already has an 850 rack facility covering 32,000 sq ft at MediaCityUK in Salford Quays.

The acquisition of the Sharp Project space will more than double DataCentred's rack capacity. DataCentred is due to submit a planning application to cover part of the Sharp Project warehouse exterior nearest to the Central Park Metrolink station with fans and cladding as part of a rack cooling system.

DataCentred was established in 2012 by Dr. Mike Kelly, former chairman of TeleCity. It received a £4m funding package in May this year, with contributions from the Greater Manchester Investment Fund, the North West Fund for Venture Capital and investor Jon Moulton.

Canning O'Neill advised DataCentred on the acquisition.

Sue Woodward, founder of the Sharp Project, said: "It's fantastic to partner up with such a leading force in the data centre sector. Not only will our tenants and other local businesses benefit from having this resource on site, but, by creating a digital bridge across to our neighbours at MediaCityUK, the region's biggest media hubs will be linked enabling even more collaboration. Having Datacentred based at the Sharp Project will generate even more jobs and help boost the local economy."

The Sharp Project is home to more than 50 digital entrepreneurs and production companies specialising in digital content production, digital media and TV and film production. The project is based in a 200,000 sq ft refurbished warehouse previously occupied by electronics company Sharp and offers flexible office, production and event space at affordable prices.

The £16.5m profit-for-purpose development is owned by Manchester City Council.
