Conlon wins £3m Preston market hall contract

Preston-based Conlon Construction has been appointed to build the city’s new market hall, beating off competition from nine local and national contractors.

Cllr Peter Rankin, leader of Preston City Council, said: “The Markets Quarter is Preston City Council’s flagship project and we are delighted to appoint Conlon Construction to build the city’s new market. Conlon Construction are not only great at what they do they truly care about the people they employ and work with.

“Conlon are a progressive company who pay the living wage and they have a deep commitment to Preston. Building the new market is a great way for Preston to start 2017.”

Construction of the new market hall is the third phase of the £50m Markets Quarter project. The new hall and overall plans for the city’s markets have been designed by the Frank Whittle Partnership with Greig & Stephenson Associates. It will sit underneath the historic canopies currently being restored.

Muse is working with the city council on the Markets Quarter, where it is to deliver an 11-screen cinema operated by The Light, seven family restaurants, a 593-space car park and improved public realm, on the site of the current indoor market.

Michael Conlon, chairman at Conlon Construction, said: “We’re thrilled to be working at the heart of the community and delivering a programme of works that will revive Preston Markets. Preston has transformed from a small market town and this project will bring the new market in line with its city status and attract new visitors as well as make a great space for traders.”
