Conlon rebuilds Christian conference centre

Conlon Construction has begun work on new conference facilities at Capernwray Hall in Carnforth, Lancashire.

The Bamber-Bridge based construction company has started the demolition of the existing building to start work on a £1.9m development on the same plot. Conlon will build a 15,500 sq ft two-storey building designed by Chris Rushton of Lakes Architects in keeping with Capernwray Hall's traditional design. The facilities will include a new conference hall as well as 14 en-suite bedrooms for conference attendees and students.

Capernwray Hall designThe 19th century mansion is currently used as a Christian holiday and conference centre, with more than 1,500 guests during the summer months and 180 international students staying each winter.

Michael Conlon, construction director of Conlon Construction, said: "The mansion is set in beautiful grounds and we are looking forward to creating new facilities that will benefit the guests of Capernwray for many years to come."

Mark Thomas, director of Capernwray Hall, said: "We are thrilled that this project has now reached the building stage and is underway and we express our thanks to everyone who generously gave their support and made funds available.

"We have every confidence that Conlon will ensure the new facility fits within the traditional design of Capernwray Hall itself and its surroundings. When the new hall opens next year it will provide a much-needed modern building suited for our programmes"

The new building is expected to be completed in February 2013.
