Chester prepares for festive period
Chester Renaissance, the economic development agency for the city centre, has announced plans for a Victorian Christmas market in Castle Square.
The market will be supported by a big wheel, ice rink and Santa's grotto during the two-month event in the city this year.
More than 40 black and white timber clad shops, offering traditional British produce to hand-crafted gifts, will feature in Castle Square.
Rita Waters, chief executive of Chester Renaissance, said: "Chester has seen nothing like this before and it will provide the city and our retailers, hotels, bars and restaurants with a huge and very welcome financial boost in what are difficult economic times.
"This important Christmas event has come about thanks to the partnership working between the team at City Management, Chester Renaissance and Cheshire West & Chester Council.
"However, it couldn't have gone ahead at all without the help and assistance of Her Majesty's Court Service. We are indebted to the Service for its valued contribution in terms of the safety and management of the event at what is a sensitive location."
Chester's Christmas lights will be switched on by the Lord Mayor, Cllr Neil Ritchie, at 6.30pm on Thursday 11 November, which will be followed by a 7.30pm firework display to signal the opening of the Victorian Christmas Market.

Visited this the other day and must say I was quite impressed. Smaller than Manchester’s markets but good for starters, helped greatly by the wheel and ice rink. Just wish the space was bigger for more stalls but overall really good. You must try one of the chocolate and banana pancakes!
