Catalyst’s New Cross StayCity completes
Construction of the 224-apartment Manchester scheme has concluded 18 months after original contractor Bardsley Construction entered administration.
Designed by SimpsonHaugh, the building was developed by Catalyst Capital through its MSDL Properties vehicle, and is owned by Knight Frank Investment Management.
The StayCity Aparthotels block is on a site bounded by Mason Street, Cable Street, and Cross Keys Street in the New Cross area of the city.
The building is the serviced apartment operator’s second Manchester site.
Plans for the Mason Street project were first lodged in November 2017 and approved the following March. Bardsley was then appointed to build the nine-storey block on a £17m contract before starting on site in June 2018.
However, 18 months later, Bardsley appointed Duff & Phelps as administrator and its projects stalled.
Bardsley owed £45m to creditors at the time of its collapse, according to administrators.
MSDL Management, another Catalyst Capital vehicle, replaced Bardsley and has now completed the project , which is due to open on 12 July.
StayCity’s other city centre offering is on Piccadilly Approach. The company used to operate another site on Laystall Street but surrendered the lease in 2018.
A third Manchester aparthotel is nearing completion at Property Alliance Group’s 3 St Peter’s Square. The 20-storey building will feature 108 StayCity apartments and 324 bedrooms, operated by Motel One.
It looks even worse in the flesh. New Cross is off to a terrible start.

It looks even better in the flesh, New Cross is coming back from the brink!

I think it looks great personally, a really good example of how good prefabricated panels can look when done with care.

This does look really good in the flesh, not sure what Observer is talking about.
