Burscough FC redevelopment clears planning hurdle

Proposals to redevelop the site of Burscough FC’s stadium and to build a new facility for the football club have moved forward, with a decision on the plans now resting with the Secretary of State.

The football club has been looking to relocate for more than 10 years; a planning application was first put forward in 2007 but this scheme never materialised.

More recently, Burscough FC secured planning permission for a new stadium on an adjacent 4.2-acre plot in August 2017. The land for the new facility at Victoria Park was purchase by the club’s owners in early 2018.

To make the move happen and provide funding, the club is looking to redevelop its existing ground. It currently plays in the North West Counties League.

Under these plans, the existing  3,000-capacity stadium bounded by Bobby Langton Way will be demolished to make way for a development by housing association Torus.

This will provide 52 houses on the site, including 15 two-beds, 21 three beds, six four-beds and 10 apartments for the over 55s; all of these will be made available as affordable homes.

West Lancashire Council agreed to back the proposals at a planning committee meeting on 10 January; planning officers had recommended the scheme for approval ahead of the meeting.

The planners’ report said: “The proposal will deliver 52 affordable new homes on a brownfield site in an accessible location in the borough, which would contribute to housing delivery targets and also provide accommodation suitable for the elderly.

“The redevelopment of this site will contribute financially to the development of a new football ground for Burscough FC, although adequate play and training facilities would be provided prior to commencement of development on the site to ensure continuity of play.”

The council’s planning committee resolved to grant the plans, subject to a Section 106 agreement, and subject to no objection from the Secretary of State.

The professional team on the project includes planning consultant Smith & Love and architect ABW.

How are they going to squeeze these properties in? Where is all the parking going to be. Our village can’t cope with all these as well as the 650 on Liverpool Road South the roads and infrastructure is inadequate. But as normal people who don’t live here make the decisions and we have no recall.
