Booths beats supermarket squeeze with 30% profit leap
Preston-based quality supermarket chain Booths reported a 30% increase in profit during 2007 from £6.9m the previous year.
An ethical and environmental approach to sourcing food was behind the growth, according to chairman Edwin Booth. Sales rose by 4% to £243m.
The family-owned business, which dates back to 1847, also invested £2m in a more efficient warehouse and distribution network.
Booths operates 26 stores, predominantly in affluent mid-size towns across the North of England. The latest store to open was Lytham in 2007. Stores in Ripon, North Yorkshire, and a replacement outlet in Garstang, Lancashire, will open in 2009. Another Lancashire store, in Hesketh Bank, is due to open in 2010.
