BCO Northern Regional Award winners unveiled

Allied London's Spinningfields commercial district in Manchester won two awards at last night's British Council for Offices ceremony.

Around 200 people attended the awards ceremony at the Hilton in Manchester. Among the winners, 1 The Avenue in Spinningfields was named best commercial workplace, with judges praising 'an iconic gateway building' and 'a unique working environment appropriate to niche occupiers'.

Law firm Pinsent Mason's Manchester offices at No. 3 Hardman Street in Spinningfields won the award for best fit-out of workplace, carried out by contractor Overbury.

The Information Systems Services Building (ISS) at Lancaster University was named best corporate workplace and was praised for being a 'bold architectural statement' on campus.

Cooper's Studios on Westgate Road in Newcastle upon Tyne was named best project up to 2,000 sq m for its transformation of a derelict horse-carriage sales room complete with stables into a phenomenal studio workspace with character that is, according to the judges, 'hard to find'.

Neil Taylor, BCO judging chairman for the North of England, North Wales and Northern Ireland, said: "The focus of the BCO awards is to judge buildings from a multi-disciplinary point of view, focussing on aspects such as architectural flair, economic and sustainable construction with fitness for purpose for users of the space. We had a very high standard of entries this year from the North of England, North Wales and Northern Ireland that have really delivered fantastic workspaces for the end user and I'd like to congratulate our winners."

Meanwhile, private equity firm The Carlyle Group has announced that Four Piccadilly Place, an office building developed by Argent and designed by architects Hodder and Partners, has been shortlisted for a national innovation award from The British Council of Offices, following the regional awards held in Manchester.

Mark Harris, director at the Carlyle Group, said: "This is a great achievement for the team that worked hard to produce the final building and we are delighted that Four Piccadilly Place is now in line to receive a prestigious national award. We are justifiably proud of the development which encapsulates grade 'A' office accommodation in a perfect location right next to Manchester's main transport hub."

The building will be taken forward to the national final with other regional winners, which is being held at the Grosvenor Hotel in London on the 5 October.
