Balfour Beatty JV wins £240m Sellafield contract
A joint venture between Balfour Beatty, AMEC and Jacobs has been appointed to a nuclear framework contract worth more than £240m at Sellafield in Cumbria.
The three-way equal partnership will be the sole contractor to build a Box Encapsulation Plant, a nuclear waste processing facility which will receive, segregate and encapsulate hazardous waste already stored on the Sellafield site.
The joint venture will be responsible for the complete life cycle of the scheme from design, engineering, procurement, installation and construction management through to commissioning and handover.
The processing plant is part of Sellafield's wider programme to prepare hazardous nuclear waste for storage and disposal. The facility will also process waste recovered from other facilities on the Sellafield site once they are decommissioned.
A joint venture between Atkins, Mace and Areva was named earlier this year as the preferred bidder for a £1bn contract to build a Silos Direct Encapsulation Plant, which will also deal with waste retrieval and hazard reduction.
Work is scheduled to start on the Box Encapsulation Plant in the fourth quarter of 2014.
