Aldi inks Congleton land deal

Clowes Developments has sold a two-acre plot at Viking Park to the discount supermarket chain, which aims to open the 20,000 sq ft store this autumn.

Cheshire East Council approved Aldi’s £7.5m Congleton plans last September and J.C Balls and Sons has carried out enabling works.

Above ground construction is now ready to begin ahead of the ribbon-cutting later this year.

Bryn Richards, Aldi real estate director said: “After working closely with Clowes Developments, we’re excited to be completing the purchase of land at Viking Way, so that we can start to deliver on our £7.5 million investment into Congleton.

“Our public consultation saw over 450 people pledge support for the new store. People were especially supportive of the bespoke design and landscaping planned for the store, which will ensure that it complements its setting within the town.”

Marc Freeman, director at Clowes Developments, added: “The construction of this plot will bring the retail element of this development to life as well as bringing significant investment and a wealth of job opportunities to Congleton.

“I am delighted to announce the completion of a land deal with Aldi who have been particularly efficient in getting the transaction over the line and a pleasure to work with.”

Elsewhere at the mixed-use Viking Park, residential developer Bloor Homes is due to open their show home by the end of March.

On completion, Viking Park will deliver up to 175 homes, and the Aldi store, as well as 36,800 sq ft office facilities and 219,500 sq ft of industrial units.
