Maghull school rebuild primed for consent
The Department for Education proposes demolishing the existing Deyes High School and replacing it with a modern facility for 1,200 pupils that will be net zero carbon in operation
Sefton Council is poised to approve the Maghull project, part of the government’s £2bn School Rebuilding Programme, when its planning committee meets next week.
Keir Construction has been appointed as main contractor for the Deyes High School scheme, which was designed by Pozzoni Architecture.
Apart from the 300-student sixth form, all existing buildings on the 13-acre site would be demolished to make way for a new 110,000 sq ft facility.
In addition, the project proposes indoor and outdoor sports facilities, and a part-covered, six-court multi-use games area.
Under the terms of the School Rebuilding Programme, the existing school must remain in use until the replacement teaching facilities are complete.
This dictates that the new building can only be built on the current playing fields. Once complete and pupils and staff have transferred into the new building, the existing school buildings can be demolished and new playing fields created in their place.
Smith & Love is the planning consultant for the project and Ridge is the civil and structural engineer. DEP is the landscape architect.
Also on the project team are mechanical and electrical engineer TACE, fire expert Orion, acoustic consultant MZA Acoustics, highways consultant Flinders Chase, ICT consultant Kier DaBS, FF&E consultant Pinnacle and catering consultant Airdale Catering. Miller Goodall is the air quality assessor and Tree Solutions is the arboricultural consultant.
The application’s reference number with Sefton Council is DC/2022/00375.
Why are people letting this happen? This was the most beautiful, iconic, red ivy-covered building. First, the ivy was removed and not replaced. Now, yet another horrific grey eyesore is planned along with the criminal destruction of the existing stately building. What is wrong with this council? They are intent on turning Sefton into a vile, treeless, grey, characterless tundra.
