Peel unveils £155m Wigan masterplan
More than 1,000 new homes would be built in Mosley Common under the proposals by Peel L&P.
Set on 156 acres, the homes would be geared towards a wide group, including first-time buyers, families, downsizers and the elderly. Of the 1,100 new homes proposed, 25% would be designated affordable.
Peel also wants to build a community and travel hub, which would have spaces for classes and events. Promoting active travel, the plans include ensuring there is a rich network of footpaths and cycleways between the site and Walkden train station. Also proposed: a guided busway stop that will provide connections across Wigan and Greater Manchester.
“Our masterplan for Mosley Common builds on the natural characteristics of the area to create a new community which focuses on housing for a mix of needs, sustainable travel, green spaces, better health and wellbeing opportunities and improved biodiversity,” said Annabel Partridge, associate director of development planning at Peel.
“This is an investment of over £150m for Wigan to support community wealth building within the borough and will create many jobs for the area.”
The Mosley Common plans are currently undergoing consultation. You can see the proposals and submit feedback at mosleycommonconsultation.co.uk.

Ironic that they’ve just announced this after planning was recently refused at Hulton Park…

There have been rumors of this development for some time but as a local resident im absolutely horrified by the sheer scale of this development. Peel, not content with trying to build over every scrap of green space in Salford they are now targeting Mossley Common. The traffic problems are going to be off the scale

25% of the houses will be designated affordable. Ergo 75% of the houses will be unaffordable. I think that says it all!

Does the area have the amenities ( Schools, GPs , dentists etc) to support an additional 1,000 homes?. All these are already subscribed as it is unless there are plans to for additional support in these areas?

Would there be plans to expand current schools or build a new one?

A number of the local residents are against this. It got the most objections of any site in the masterplan. There is a facebook group called “Save Mosley Common’s Greenbelt” which you can join for more information.

Where are the roads, public transport? Burnham’s guided busway is NOT the answer. Is it WMBC goal to build on every blade of grass?

Question : as it is already standing room only on the V2 and V1 bus when it gets to new earth , will extra buses be part of the plan ?

God please no. Not a guided busway. Can’t we have proper rail infrastructure instead… you know… like the developed world
