Wainhomes gets green light in Carrington

Housebuilder Wainhomes is to deliver 277 homes at Carrington Village, part of the Future Carrington regeneration scheme, after consent was given under delegated powers.

Trafford Council approved the reserved matters application for the houses, ranging from one-bedroom to four, alongside a range of infrastructure improvement works to surrounding roads.

Wainhomes, which is expected to start on site early in the New Year, will be delivering starter to executive family homes of which 5% will be made affordable through discounted market sale.

Architects DGL Associates, APD and TPM Landscape have combined to produce what is described by the developer as a ‘Cheshire village’ feel for the development, including a tree-lined boulevard from Manchester Road, a village green and wider landscape enhancement works, along with complementary and bespoke housing designs. The first units and a show home complex are expected to be completed in late 2019.

Carrington Village forms part of phase one of developer Himor’s vision for the 1,660-acre Carrington estate, formerly dominated by a Shell petrochemical works and said by the developer to be one of the largest brownfield regeneration sites in Europe.

Ground was broken on Carrington Gateway, the other core element of the project’s first phase, in November. The first phase of industrial here comprises 220,000 sq ft.

Peter Barlow, managing director of Wainhomes, said: “Carrington Village will transform the look and feel of the site and signal its rebirth as a vibrant new community. For many families and young professionals, for whom many neighbouring areas of Trafford are out of reach, the village will offer a rural Cheshire lifestyle on Manchester’s doorstep.”

Mark Booth, managing director of Himor, added: “We’re gathering real momentum now and our long journey to regenerate the Carrington Estate is becoming a reality. Gateway and the Village are the two cornerstones of its future by bringing back major employment and delivering new housing.”

Most of the site lies south of Manchester Road, between that main road and the private road extending east-west through the Shell site known as the A1 road. Ackers Lane forms the boundary to the site’s east while to the west the site adjoins housing on School Lane.

Planning officers recommended approval, highlighting the “high quality green infrastructure and substantial open space” outlined in a “well-designed scheme” with a “strong sense of place”. While officers had concerns over some aspects, including some house type details and parking courts, it was felt that these did not outweigh the significant benefits identified.
