J Cooney returns to re-do Altrincham road work
Work to bring Stamford New Road up to the specification demanded for its redevelopment earlier this year will take place in June, contractor J Cooney has confirmed.
With the town centre resurgent around Altrincham Market, Trafford Council has invested over £3m in public realm works in the town, with Stamford New Road, a key retail pitch and thoroughfare, at the heart of the plan.
Works were completed on a scheme including a central granite median strip ahead of schedule by J Cooney, the Rochdale-based civil engineering contractor, in April. But a subsequent inspection found faults with the job, with chippings in the tarmac being of the wrong colour and type meaning the surface did not appear as the council required.
Helen Jones, corporate director for economic growth, environment and infrastructure, said: “The council has invested a lot of time and money in planning and undertaking the works which will significantly improve the pedestrian and traffic flow in the area in addition to its appearance.
“Following an inspection of the final works on Stamford New Road, the council was disappointed to find that the road surface was not completed to the agreed standard with the contractor meaning the long-awaited unveiling didn’t have the desired high impact we expected. Whilst this will mean some further short-term disruption, it is important that it is right.”
The works will take place over four or five nights from 12 June, and will coincide with works by BT on Stamford New Road to install superfast broadband.
