Peel ponders ‘skydiving’ wind tunnels in Trafford
Peel Holdings is in talks with indoor 'skydiving' operator Airkix about opening one of its vertical wind tunnels next to the Chill Factore snow centre in Trafford, Greater Manchester.
Airkix uses a series of fans and chambers to create an air stream with a wind speed of up to 150mph suitable for free-fall manoeuvres. The only existing Airkix built to date opened in Milton Keynes in 2005.
The company is publicly listed and aims to build a series of centres in the UK over the next few years and says a number of sites have already been identified. Customers pay around £34.99 for an hour-long package, which includes two flights.
If completed, the Airkix and Peel deal would boost the leisure park now named Trafford Quays Leisure Village near the retail giant of the Trafford Centre.
The leisure park includes David Lloyd Leisure, JJB Soccerdome, Playgolf and the £31m real snow centre, Chill Factore, which has traded well since opening last November.
All parties declined to comment.
