Gorton Monastery takes top prize at RICS NW awards

Gorton Monastery in Manchester won project of the year as well as the prize for building conservation at the RICS North West ceremony held on Friday at the City of Manchester Stadium.

The former church and friary was once listed in the 100 most endangered sites in the world before undergoing a £6.5m restoration.

The RICS NW 2009 winners in full were as follows:

Building conservation

  • Winner: Gorton Monastery
  • Highly commended: Birkenhead Park Restoration

Commercial

  • Winner: Liverpool One
  • Highly commended: Piccadilly Plaza

Community benefit

  • Winner: Altrincham Grammar School for Boys
  • Highly commended: Picton Neighbourhood Health and Childrens' Centre

Design and Innovation

  • Winner: Budenberg Haus Projekte
  • Highly commended: Piccadilly House

Regeneration

  • Winner: Liverpool One
  • Highly commended: Crowcroft at Northmoor, Manchester

Residential

  • Winner: Parkway Gate, Manchester
  • Highly commended: Richmond Hill Salford

Sustainability

  • Winner: Edge Hill University, Faculty of Health
  • Highly commended: BDP Manchester Studio

Tourism and Leisure

  • Winner: The Vincent Hotel, Southport
  • Highly commended: The Midland Hotel, Manchester
